What is an electrocardiogram?

The electrocardiogram is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart. The results are printed on graph paper.
The electrocardiogram recorded in that role changes that occur in the small electrical currents that occur in the heart with each beat.
It is an essential tool for the analysis of arrhythmias, study of heart disease and particularly useful in acute episodes of heart disease such as myocardial infarction test.

The electrocardiogram is performed as follows:
The patient lies to place the electrodes on each arm, both legs and chest. Sometimes it is necessary to clean the area or shave the hair
EKG cables are connected to the patient's skin using adhesives or suction cups subject to the ankles, wrists and the patient's chest (electrodes). Thus the same signal is collected from different positions.
The person should stay relaxed, without speaking, with normal breathing and with arms and legs still.

The electrocardiogram is absolutely painless. When the electrodes are applied for the first time you can feel the cold. In very rare circumstances, the patient may develop a localized rash or irritation in the area where the electrodes are placed.
